A chant to help you remember how to pronounce (or not pronounce) certain letters at the end of words. LETTERS WHICH ARE ALSO NOT PRONOUNCED (unless there is an e at the end) - p and d. So silent letters : s, t, x, p and d. Generally, if the word ends in t or s, you do NOT pronounce them, EXCEPT for s and t if the next word is followed by a vowel. e.g. les anglais (/lez ɑ̃ɡlɛ/, and not /le ɑ̃ɡlɛ/) and tout homme (/tutɔm/). This is called liaison, and of course, they themselves have exceptions... So yes, there are exceptions e.g. sens (/sɑ̃s/), but for the most part it is safer to NOT pronounce these letters if they are AT THE END of the word. -ent is one that I put down that is purely for conjugations. For the 3rd person plural, the -ent is NEVER pronounced. e.g. parlent (/paʁl/), finissent (/finis/) HOWEVER, they are pronounced when -ent is in an adjective or noun. e.g. intelligent (/ɛ̃teliʒɑ̃/), Laurent (/loʁɑ̃/, /lɔʁɑ̃/) Hope this helps ! Special thanks to my bros Salem Long and Pan Wang for helping me with the creation of this video ;)
